This hat pattern features twin cables that twist in opposite directions and are slightly offset. This pattern results in a very stretchy fabric so it may look small while knitting, but it stretches to fit larger heads. This is a good project to try when learning to work with cables.

This hat pattern features two colors merging into a saw-tooth pattern. This is accomplished using the technique known as Fair Isle or stranded knitting. The pattern is sized to accommodate three head sizes.

Helix Hat

A helix is a spiral. These hats are knit with two different yarns that form alternating stripes, creating no discernible beginning or ending of a round. Using one solid color yarn and one variegated yarn creates interesting color patterns. The pattern includes two versions for the hat brim, one solid color garter stitch brim and one rolled brim knit in the helix pattern. The pattern also includes three hat sizes.

Mitts with a Twist texting mitts, or fingerless gloves, are knit using a technique called “Twined or Twisted Knitting”. On the public, or right side, of the mitts it looks similar to stranded knitting, but twined knitting produces a fabric with more stretch than stranded knitting. This technique also produces a heavier fabric (almost a double layer of yarn) so the mitts are warm and comfortable. The pattern includes a thumb gusset for a more flexible and comfortable fit. The stitch pattern incorporates two yarn colors and is very effective when a solid and a variegated yarn are used.

“Twined” or “twisted” knitting is made with two strands of yarn, traditionally the same color, but using two different colors creates interesting textures, especially when one is a variegated yarn. As you knit, each strand is twisted around the other on the wrong side, making the wrong side very attractive. Twined knitting results in a thicker and warmer fabric that is much more elastic than stranded knitting.
